New Taipei City (Chinese: 新北市; pinyin: Xīnběi Shì; literally "New North City") is a direct-controlled municipality of the Republic of China located in northern Taiwan. It is the most populous city in Taiwan, surrounding the capital city of Taipei. The area bordersYilan to its east, Keelung on the north and Taoyuan on the south. New Taipei was formerly called Taipei County (traditional Chinese: 台北縣) as a county of Taiwan Province before December 25, 2010.

The legal romanized name of the city was initially declared to be Xinbei City, as stated by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI). The mayor Eric Chu preferred the name New Taipei City, and after he submitted a formal request to the MOI, the MOI approved the use of "New Taipei."
